John grew up in north central Missouri, the son of a farmer and homemaker and the oldest of five children. While in high school, John had a “born again” experience through the influence of a Fellowship of Christian Athletes group. After graduating from Brookfield High School, John got a Biology Education degree at the University of Missouri and began teaching high school science and coaching football and basketball at Centralia High School. During his second year of teaching, John’s friends set him up on a date with another college friend. The two were married 8 months later and celebrated 20 years of marriage in 2014. John and Kathleen have three children. Kathleen is a homemaker and a former home school teacher for all three kids. After serving as an interim pastor in the summer of 2003, John sensed God leading him to enter the ministry full-time and moved to Harrisburg in 2004 where he has continued to serve as pastor. John likes spending time with family, games, competition, exercise, outdoor adventure, reading, playing guitar, baptisms, and sitting around the table and talking about the Christian faith.
